My Story
30 years of experience. A lifetime of learning.
Hello! I’m Vickie Brown - I’ve been a registered nurse for over 30 years, working in medical surgical nursing, home health, nurse educator, and many more areas. I’m enthusiastic about people, my profession, and my purpose with Christ. If we can learn to be altruistic with each other both physically and spiritually, I believe that we would have no limits in this field.

When I was growing up in a small town in TN to a family of 10 children, I wasn’t really sure of too many things. Two things were clear though: a love of God, and a love of helping others. One thing my foster mother always wanted to instill in us was to find our own personal relationship with Him, and I’m so grateful that I did. Between that, and patching up my siblings (and the rest of the neighborhood), I felt those two things growing stronger and stronger in my heart.
Years later, I left Tennessee to head farther south to Huntsville, Alabama, where I attended Oakwood College (now Oakwood University). I achieved my nursing degree, and also met my future husband of now 30+ years, Ted Brown. He was from Detroit, studying business and theology. He, along with some other new friends, helped to strengthen my own personal goals in wanting to grow more in my field, as well as becoming dedicated partners in encouraging all of us to keep seeking Jesus and His guidance.
Ted and I spent some time in New Mexico before settling down in Texas. Here, I had my three (now grown) kids - Theodore II, Victoria, and Vanitra (you can probably see a naming pattern!). I was able to complete my B.S.N. from UTA, and began teaching there after earning my MSN. I was also able to become involved with various ministries at my local church, and eventually a collaborator on different global platforms. I knew that Jesus had been putting me in situations that He had prepared me for, and I was so glad to just be apart of His plan! Ted was working as a CFO and a minister, so together we were able to invest in each other - both professionally and spiritually. I planned and taught children and youth programs for churches all over the Southwest, and had many opportunities to show adult members ways they could be empowered to lead and develop their own unique programs for their individual churches as well. As my kids began to transition from elementary, to junior high, to high school, professionally, I began to take on new challenges as well. I spent some time in Home Healthcare, Methodist Hospital System and El Centro Community College, as well as continuing to stay active in ministry and speaking engagements.
Once my oldest had graduated from high school, our family left Texas for Indiana, and then back to Alabama - where so much of my life had become shaped. Transitioning back to the South has been a welcome change of pace - both for the scenery, and the old friends who’ve also moved closer to my alma matter. While I’ve been here teaching at Calhoun Community College, I’ve always balanced work with staying involved in ministry - as long as Jesus decides to put me in places that I can share Him with others, it’ll always be a passion of mine. He’s opened so many doors for me, and that’s why I’m able to be here today.
I love becoming involved in visiting communities near and far, providing guest lectures, workshops, and presentations to a wide variety of audiences. Some presentation topics may include Children’s Ministries, Health, Leadership, Women’s Ministries, and more. I believe that knowledge is a gift that is always strengthened when shared, so if you’re interested in connecting, don’t hesitate to reach out!

My Experiences
A New Chapter with every journey
Over my career, I’ve been able to provide theoretical and clinical supervision to registered and licensed practical/vocational nursing students in medical/surgical, fundamentals, geriatrics, community, and obstetrical nursing units - evaluating their clinical performance with a new method that I had the privilege to assist with development. When facilitating the theoretical learning in the classroom, I provide leadership for evidence based practice (or EBP, for those familiar with that term), evaluate students' retention of information on an ongoing basis, participate in the diverse perspectives of each college’s goals and achievements, and serve on departmental and college’s committees. I collect and submit accurate class records, prepare course materials for the institution’s learning platform and college catalog, and also prepare materials for maintenance of accreditation.
I also publish quarterly in the college’s bulletin (newsletter). I'm also an ACEN (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing) Program Evaluator. I’ve had the opportunity to assist the institutions I’ve been employed with to write three successful self studies for ongoing ACEN accreditation.
It’s a privilege and an honor to be part of such a wonderful profession - I truly believe there’s no better time to be a nurse than right now, and I thank those who shoulders we stand on that paved the way for us.
